The son of an underground filmmaker, Downey Jr. bounced from city to city growing up, instilling a movement in the future star. By the time he was 17, he had dropped out of high school and moved to New York to become an actor. And today, more than 30 years later, Downey Jr. has ridden one wave after another -- some nearly catastrophic -- that have made him Hollywood's highest paid actor and one of its most beloved stars.

From his upbringing by his father to his unbelievable "Avengers" paycheck, here are 11 crazy things you probably don't know about Robert Downey Jr.



1 - His father, Robert Downey Sr., is a writer and director whose basement-budgeted indie films earned an underground following beginning in the 1960s.

As a result of his father's work, Downey Jr. moved around frequently as a child, living in Connecticut, New York, California, London, Paris, and Woodstock, NY. While living in London at the age of 10, the future actor even studied classical ballet.

At 17, Downey Jr. dropped out of Santa Monica High School and moved to New York to become an actor. His first jobs included bussing tables and working in a shoe store.

His father reportedly introduced Downey Jr. to drugs when he was just 8 years old, offering him a joint.

By the '90s, Downey Jr. had become as well known for his heavy drug use as for his talent. In 1999, after unsuccessfully going through drug treatment programs, the actor stood in front of a courtroom judge and explained, "It's like I've got a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal."

In the early 2000s, Downey Jr. began practicing Wing Chun -- a form of kung fu -- and credits it for giving him strength to overcome his addictions. In 2003, RDJ had a sudden epiphany and threw all of his drugs into the ocean.

In 2004, Downey Jr. recorded and released a solo album. The album, titled "The Futurist," was released through Sony, and is described as "highbrow pop with jazz and classical influences."

In 2008, Downey Jr. was nearly not allowed to enter Japan for the premiere of "Iron Man" because of his past troubles with the law. After being detained and interrogated for six hours, the actor was finally able to enter the country on the condition that he would never be allowed to enter Japan again.
